For the fifth Beamline for Schools competition the submission period ended on 31 March 2018. In total, 195 teams have participated with more than 1500 students. A big thank you to all participants!
The proposals originated from 42 countries worldwide. See our world map for more details. The highest number of submissions has been received from Turkey with 34 propsals, followed by the UK with 16 proposals and India with 14 proposals. In 2018 six countries took part in BL4S for the first time: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco and Pakistan. This emphasizes the fact that Beamline for Schools is a worldwide competition, which motivates and encourages students from all over the globe to jump into the fascinating world of particle physics.
Moreover, we are very pleased to see that once again one third of all participants are female. Physics, mathematics, engineering, information technology etc. are subjects where everybody can get involved with – regardless of their gender.
Currently, the evaluation process is ongoing. We are in the final step to select two winning teams, which will be invited to CERN in September to carry out their proposed experiments. Furthermore, up to 30 short-listed teams will be nominated to win BL4S t-shirts for all participants as well as a Cosmic Pi detector.
An official press release will follow in June. Stay tuned!
